In memory of my dad, we decided to have our own Tahlia Farm coffee brand. As a child I can remember - every morning - my dad waking before the sun. That's when you'd find Dad, a steaming mug of coffee cradled in his hands. He wouldn't drink straight from it, though. Instead, with a practiced hand, he'd pour the brew into the saucer, letting the silence of the dawn mingle with the rising tendrils of steam.

The coffee was always too hot, a fiery promise of the long day ahead. But in the saucer, it cooled just enough, each sip a moment of quiet contemplation. In those sips, Dad saw the fields waiting, the animals needing care, the sun on its inevitable rise. It was a quiet kind of strength, a fuelling of the soul before the body followed suit.

We never asked why the saucer. Maybe it was a habit, a ritual that marked the start of his day. Or maybe, in that wide, shallow dish, he saw a reflection of the vastness that awaited him – the sky slowly turning from inky black to the hopeful gold of a new day.
