The husband and wife team of Andries and Alicia Burger of Tahlia Farm - located on the picturesque R62 near the town of Montagu - is known for their exceptional crafting award-winning gins from the prickly pear plant.
Nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of the region, this niche farm and distillery have garnered a reputation for its dedication to producing unique and high-quality spirits and products from the prickly pear plant.
The farm was bought in 2018 by two people who both have a passion for life and creating. They had a picture of a small Karoo town in their minds when they started to develop the farm out of nothing.
Because of the arid Karoo soil, they decided to farm with prickly pears. Over the years, a deep understanding of the prickly pear plant and its distinct flavours and properties were used to create exquisite spirits and of late also cosmetics. Their commitment to sustainable farming practices ensures that the prickly pear plants are nurtured in harmony with the environment, resulting in fruit, leaves and oil of exceptional quality.
The process of transforming prickly pear fruit and leaves into premium spirits requires precision and artistry. The ripest prickly pears are carefully handpicked, ensuring that only the finest ingredients are utilized. The prickly pear fruit is known for its subtly sweet and tangy flavour profile, lending a unique character to the gins produced at Tahlia Farm.
The prickly pear leaves, on the other hand, contribute a delicate herbal essence to the gins and vodka, adding depth and complexity to the final product. Johnny King joined the team as wine maker at Tahlia Farm, and has perfected the delicate balance of blending elements of the plant with other carefully selected botanicals, resulting in a range of spirits that are acclaimed for their exceptional taste and quality.
